Réunion Island Exchange

Lindsay Johnston, Convenor of the Architecture Foundation Australia

with Head of L’Ecole d’Architecture de la Réunion, Pierre Rosier.

Lindsay Johnston was a visiting academic to the architecture school at Le Port on Réunion Island, the tropical French island in the Indian Ocean, in October 2015, and delivered a public lecture on Tropical Architecture in Australia referring to the works of Glenn Murcutt, Richard Leplastrier, Troppo Architects, Gabriel Poole, Lindsay and Kerry Clare, Lawrence Nield and John Mainwaring, and enduring architecture by Beni Burnett (1940) and Eddie Oribin (1956). Many of these architects are Gold Medallists of the Australian Institute of Architects. He also presented lectures to students of architecture and to students of environmental engineering, which included reference to his own ‘off the grid’ Four Horizons house, in the mountains of the Hunter Valley, and the innovative office building by Zimbabwe architect Mick Pearse CH2, in Melbourne.

The exchange was arranged by architect Antoine Perrau, who is doing very interesting tropical housing, schools and sports buildings on Réunion and who will be a speaker at the Foundation Deerubbin Conference in Australia in March 2016, who is a tutor at the Réunion school.

Education programs by the Architecture Foundation Australia include the annual Glenn Murcutt International Architecture Master Class and the Architecture Student Summer School. Details on –
