Treehouse Bird Nest Lookout , Crossways Farm Village, Thornhill, South Africa

Designed while he was Design and Project Architect with CMAI Architects in Knysna, Thesen Islands

The Treehouse at Crossways Farm Village in Thornhill, South Africa, serves as a viewing point which was conceived as a Weaver Bird’s nest suspended in one of the trees on the estate. It clings lightly to the trunk of a large Eucalyptus tree.

The steel structure was manufactured off site and it was assembled and cladded within one week without the use of scaffolding or any heavy machinery – this includes the ramp, which was connected using a standard vehicular towbar with a chain brace on either side to allow for movement in all directions when the tree moves during strong winds.

Michael Louw was born in Namibia, worked as a Design Architect with CMIA Architects in Knysna, Thesen Islands, South Africa and is now a Lecturer at the University of Cape Town.
