Wagga Wagga, NSW
2001 - 2003

The traditional Australian woolshed has only changed marginally over time.

The brief on the new shed at “The Bulls Run”, 50 km west of Wagga Wagga, was to re-think from basics how a woolshed should be designed. The aim was to create the optimal work environment for shearers, to meet the highest quality standards for wool preparation and to create the easiest and best conditions for sheep handling.

The orientation and siting of the woolshed was highly considered so as to most benefit other logical outcomes. Handling major temperature change, particularly extreme heat, was a major design objective.

The result is a building that uses the latest materials and understanding to create a structure that delivers more than a traditional woolshed. The actual design reflects this approach: it is functional and direct without decorative
elements.

In summary “The Bulls Run” shed is a striking example of an integrated total re-think of woolshed design. A functional and sustainable response to design problems has delivered a new structure, differing from the
traditional image. Its concern for a quality work environment is ground-breaking and its use of knowledge, materials and techniques sets new quality standards for an Australian rural icon.
