Theatre House
Kilcare Beach, NSW
Theatre House is a clear diagram of response to weather extremes coupled with spiritual attraction of captivating views from its site to Kilcare Beach.
The roof and structure are ‘sculpture’ and deliberately ‘shelter’. Planar surfaces angular to the structure produce a variety of internal and external rooms of a scale complementary to the prospect over the ocean beyond. Verandahs of varying sizes along all edges respond to orientation.
Internal planning enjoys a particular freedom that allows the spirit to wander at ease and without inherited temperament or lifestyles. Recycled hardwood portal frames support a simple roof plane, blade walls under provide specific solutions to site, sun, shade, weather and ventilation.
The eastern wall is skewed to the north with full height louvres that open to winter sun but close to the heat of summer. The western wall, subject to the harshest evening sun, has one small opening to a view to the surf break. The glazed southern wall opens the house, rising doors allowing maximum free area for the indoors to spill out.
The detailing is direct, and the finish is simple. The house could be dismantled and all pieces recycled.
