Avalon House
Northern Beaches, NSW
A house for a young family on steep east facing land on the Northern Beaches of Sydney.
A low cost prefabricated building using steel - the primary structure took two days to assemble. Elegant resolution is evident concealing the time it took to design. Functional, industrial, economical fixtures and fittings are employed and finishes are direct and low cost.
A skillion roof and high glazing give the roof a lightness in the surrounding tree canopy. The entry space is deliberately grand and communicates both the site beyond and the life within.
Location of the office at the entry restricts business to the edge of the home. The grand scale of the main space flows to open views rather than adjacent neighbours. Downstairs, bedrooms and bathrooms are quietened by major shifts in scale and reductions in light.
The outcome is a palate of varied experiences using a minimum of architectural tools.
