TheArchitecture Foundation Australia is a not-for profit association, the trustees of which are Glen Murcutt, Richard Leplastrier, Peter Stutchbury, Lindsay Johnston and the association lawyer Steve Rayfield.
The mission of the Foundation is to further the cultural and educational dimensions of the discipline of Architecture. The Foundation’s principal activity is presenting the annual Glenn Murcutt International Master Class, now going to its eleventh year, which takes place in July each year at ‘Riversdale’, the Arthur and Yvonne Boyd Education Centre on the Shoalhaven River south of Sydney, and which attracts thirty selected international participants from all over the world to a two-week residential program.
The Architecture Summer School has grown from the Master Class model. It is offered as a lower cost six-day residential program specifically for architecture students.
The Summer 2011 residential course will again be held at Pittwater YHA Youth Hostel on the beautiful Pittwater inlet north if Sydney. Access is by ferry and we will be taking over the whole facility. Accommodation is included in the course fee and will be in shared rooms of the Youth Hostel (participants are required to bring their own linen). All meals will also be included.
The tutors on the course will be Richard Leplastrier, Peter Stutchbury and Lindsay Johnston and they will be involved for most part of the six days and staying adjacent to the YHA, dining with participants and leading the design studio. Glenn Murcutt may pay a visit to the proceedings during the week and it is planned to invite other guest tutors.
The program will involve a design project to be located on a site at or near the Pittwater YHA and will include detailed brief and site analysis and preparation, working in small groups, of a design proposal for presentation at a ‘big crit’ day at the end. Emphasis will be upon study of natural topography, climate, flora and fauna and design responsiveness to place. There will also be particular attention to freehand drawing as a medium for observation and analysis and design presentations will be through hand drawings and sketch models. Basic drawing and model making materials and equipment are included in the cost.
There will be an excursion to some stunning new houses in the area and a visit to Peter Stutchbury's office in Newport. The ferry ride to and from Church Point includes a scenic trip around Pittwater and the cost is also included in the fee. Kayaks are available to hire at YHA.
The inclusive fee for the course is AUS$1430 (AUS$1300 plus GST). There is no provision for non-residential participation, as the ‘Total Immersion’ involvement is central to the effectiveness of the event – spending quality time with some of Australia’s best teachers.
