09 Glenn Murcutt International Master Class
Start: Commence Sydney Airport - 11:00am Sunday 12 July 2009.
Sun 12 July.Assemble at Sydney Airport International Terminal ‘The Meeting Point’ between Exit Gates B and C. Coach leaves Sydney Airport 11.00am for ‘Riversdale’ Education Centre (designed by Murcutt, Lewin and Lark). Visit en-route to Glenn Murcutt’s Jamberoo House, where we will be met by Glenn. Welcome dinner at ‘Riversdale’ with Glenn Murcutt and the other tutors Sunday evening.
Sun 12 - Sat 18 July.Accommodation at ‘Riversdale’ in twin-share rooms. Six nights. All (excellent) food provided.
Mon 13 July. Glenn launches the Master Class to include an introduction to the project and site visits. Other tutors include Richard Leplastrier, Brit Andresen, Peter Stutchbury and Lindsay Johnston. Evening presentation after dinner by one of the tutors.
Tues 14 - Wed 15 July. Studio design work continues.
Tues 14 July. To be confirmed - visiting tutor, aboriginal elder ‘Uncle’ Max Dulumunmun Harrison will speak of aboriginal understanding of landscape, climate and place and conduct a site analysis from his indigenous knowledge. Evening presentation by one of the tutors.
Wed 15.Afternoon. Preliminary crits on site analysis by Glenn, Richard, Brit and Peter. Glenn departs back to Sydney. Evening presentation by one of the tutors.
Thur 16 - Fri 17 July. Master Class studio continues with Richard, Peter, Brit and Lindsay.
Fri 17 July. Afternoon. Preliminary crits of emerging design concepts by Richard, Peter, Brit and Lindsay.
Sat 18 July. Coach departs ‘Riversdale’ and travels to Sydney. Visit en-route to one or two houses by Peter Stutchbury in Kangaroo Valley. Picnic lunch. Check in to accommodation at Sydney hotel near popular Darling Harbour area and Chinatown. Free evening.
Sat 18 - Sun 26 July. Twin share hotel accommodation for 8 nights through to Sunday 27 July including breakfasts - costs included in fees.
Sun 19 July. To be confirmed. Excursion to the Blue Mountains to see Glenn Murcutt’s Simpson-Lee House Mount Wilson (1989-94), another new house by Glenn and Wendy Lewin and a house by Richard Leplastrier at Leura (1997-8 and 2000) - subject to client consent. Return to hotel about 6.30pm (18.30). Free evening.
Mon 20 July.Morning walk (20 minutes) to University of Sydney School of Architecture with Prof. Tom Heneghan. Studio set up with senior undergraduate students who join the class for second week and are available to assist participants draw, source materials, make models, etc. Free evening.
Tues 21 - Wed 22 July. Studio continues. Glenn, Richard, Brit, Peter and Lindsay provide tutorial support.
Tues 21 July. Evening Lecture. Glenn Murcutt, Brit, Richard Leplastrier and Peter Stutchbury – format yet to be determined.
Thur 23 July. Studio activities continue with tutors Richard, Peter and Brit.
Fri 24 July. Glenn rejoins the Master Class. Final presentation and crits with Glenn, Richard, Peter, Brit and other guest critics. Evening BBQ at University of Sydney (?) followed by a Sydney Harbour cruise or other event (to be confirmed).
Sat 25 July. Free day. Call back to studio to collect ‘stuff’, sightseeing, visit bookshops to buy books. Free evening.
Sun 26 July. Check out of hotel. Coach excursion. Visits to projects by Richard and Peter on Sydney north shore area and to offices of Peter Stutchbury at Newport Beach, one hour north from city. Finishing with a BBQ at Richard Leplastrier’s amazing home at Lovett Bay on beautiful Pittwater – access by ferry via Church Point wharf. Final farewells. Coach departs Church Point 5.30pm (17.30).
Finish. Sunday 26 July 2009. Coach returns to central Sydney, drop off in city 6.30pm (18.30) and at Sydney Airport about 7.00pm (19.00) evening.
