Program Details 2005
The 2006 Master Class may follow a slightly different format, but the
2005 program below will give an insight to the event.
Commence Sydney Airport - 12 noon Sunday 10 July 2005.
Finish central Sydney or Sydney Airport late Sunday 24 July 2005.
Sun 10 July. Assemble at Sydney Airport International
Terminal 'The Meeting Point' between Exit Gates B and C. Coach leaves
Sydney Airport 12 noon for Riversdale Education Centre. Accommodation
at Riversdale in twin-share rooms. Food Provided. Welcome by Glenn Murcutt.
Mon 11 July. Glenn launches the Master Class to include
an introduction to the project and site visits. Other tutors include Richard
Leplastrier, Peter Stutchbury and Lindsay Johnston.
Mon 11 - Wed 14 July. Glenn oversees and tutors. Evening
presentations by tutors.
Tues 12 July. Visiting tutor Max Harrison, aboriginal
elder, who will be acting as client for the design project, will speak
of aboriginal understanding of landscape, climate and place and conduct
a site analysis from his indigenous knowledge.
Wed 13 July. Excursion to Kangaroo Valley to visit houses
by Glenn and Peter. Subject to client consent, this may include Glenn's
Frederick's House Jamberoo (1981-2) and Fletcher-Page House (1996-8) plus
some exquisite houses by Peter Stutchbury. Glenn departs back to Sydney.
Thur 14 and Fri 15. Master Class studio continues with
Richard, Peter and other tutors.
Sat 16 July. Coach departs Riversdale and travels to
Sydney. Possibly including an excursion to the Blue Mountains to see Glenn
Murcutt's Simpson-Lee House Mount Wilson (1989-94) and a house by Richard
Leplastrier at Leura (1997-8 and 2000) - subject to client consent.
Sat 16 - Sun 24 July. Accommodation in twin-share rooms
at Holiday Inn Darling Harbour, Harbour Street, Darling Harbour, Sydney
for 8 nights through to Sunday 24 July including full breakfasts - costs
included in fees.
Sun 17 July. Excursion to Sydney houses by Glenn, Richard
and Peter. Details to be confirmed and dependent on owner consents.
Mon 18 July. At University of Sydney School of Architecture
with Prof. Tom Heneghan. Located about 2 km (1.25 miles) from hotel -
easy walk and on a bus route. Studio set up with senior undergraduate
students who join the class for second week and are available to assist
participants draw, source materials, make models, etc..
Tue 19 - Wed 20 July. Studio continues. Glenn, Richard,
Peter and others provide tutorial support.
Tue 19 July. Evening. Public lecture by Glenn Murcutt,
Richard Leplastrier and Peter Stutchbury for the Master Class, members
of the local profession and students at University of Sydney auditorium.
Thu 21 July. Studio activities continue with tutors.
Fri 22 July. Glenn rejoins the Master Class. Final presentation
and crits with Glenn, Richard, Peter and other tutors. Evening party.
Sat 23 July. Subject to confirmation. Excursion to University
of Newcastle campus and tour including early buildings by Glenn Murcutt
and recent and award winning buildings by Peter Stutchbury and Richard
Leplastrier. Return to Sydney late.
Sun 24 July. Itinerary to be confirmed. Visits to more
Sydney houses and to offices of Stutchbury and Pape at Newport Beach.
Sunday 24 July. Finish - Coach drop off in central Sydney,
at Holiday Inn Darling Harbour 6.00pm and at Sydney Airport about 7.00pm
(19.00) evening.
